Home Ed Forest School Taster session

March 3, 2020 at 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Free
Heart of the Woods Forest School

We are kicking off the year with a Free taster session : whether you’ve been in the past, never joined us before or are a regular member of the group, we would love to welcome you to the woods as the first signs of spring arrive!

This is an opportunity to meet us, explore the woods, meet friends and find out more about some of the exciting activities available this year, before our regular forest school sessions start on the 10th March.

Home education forest school will run fortnightly on a Tuesday 1pm – 4:30pm.

This is aimed at age 5+ years, allowing us to facilitate different activities and crafts to their relevant age group. As our home education group is a continual programme children progress to using several craft skills and handheld tools  depending on age and capabilities,  we believe this contributes to developing their own autonomy.

Forest school encourages children to take responsibility for themselves and others, to understand risk and how to make appropriate choices. They will learn to work with others, develop social and emotional skills and resilience. We find that developing these skills and letting the sessions be child led, enables them to complete tasks such as lighting the campfire or cooking their own food upon it. There is lots of fun to be had!

Some of the activities available include:

  • Habitat creation, ecology and woodland maintenance and mapping.
  • Foraging and outdoor cooking!
  • Knife and tool skills, all are encouraged to work towards our new knife safety award.
  • Tree id, uses and folklore
  • Natural tinders and fire skills
  • Pewter & woodland jewellery making
  • Free play and exploration
  • Lots of team working !

We are also able to offer an opportunity to undertake the John Muir Award within these sessions.

We ask that you come dressed appropriately and prepared for all sorts of weathers. Sensible footwear is essential as there will be walking over uneven terrain. With regards to food we will provide a snack around the campfire but if you have any dietary needs please make us aware prior to the start of the session. We recommend bringing a drink of water as it can get very warm in the woods.

We do have compost loos and baby changing facilities on site.Parking is on roadside near to the entrance to the woods.
